Prevent Alzheimer’s with Vegetables

As mentioned in the previous article, eating a vegetarian diet provides many health benefits. Today, I would like to focus on the brain, more specifically, on Alzheimer’s. According to a study published by the Journal Archives of Neurobiology (BBC News, 2003), eating a diet high in unsaturated - found in vegetables and some oils - may help lower risk of Alzheimer’s.

The researchers found that the risk of developing the disease was highest for people who consumed the highest levels of saturated fat - found in meat and dairy products (BBC News, 2003).

To be precise, according to BBC News (2003) those who consumed a lot of saturated fat were 2.3 times more likely to develop symptoms than those whose diet was low in saturated fat less than 30% of total calorie intake). On the other hand, people with diets high in unsaturated fat were up to 80% less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease than those with low intake of unsaturated fats (BBC News, 2003). Additionally, there are studies that show that a diet high in unsaturated fat and low in saturated fat may raise levels of “good” cholesterol and lower levels of “bad” cholesterol (BBC News, 2003).

Take-Home Message

Eating a diet rich in vegetable will help keeping your brain healthy and well into your golden years. At the same time, indulging in meat and animal products will double your chances of getting Alzheimer’s.
