How to Eat Healthy on a Budget

I think by now, most of us know the importance of eating right, for maintaining proper weight, and to help avoid health problems.  But, with so many of us having a budget stretched to the max, it's important to keep any grocery spending within that budget.  Yet, buying the right kind of ingredients to eat doesn't mean we have to spend more on all these food items. Prudent planning and follow-through can make such a difference!

 

  1. Buy your produce in-season, when it is most abundant, doesn't need to be shipped as far, and therefore less expensive.

  2. Make, and follow, a shopping list. I personally find that this keeps me from not only forgetting things, but makes me think twice about buying frivolous items.

  3. Get the Proper Perspective: For one, eating healthy doesn't really mean buying foods that are more expensive. JJ Virgin, a fitness/nutrition expert says, “I had one woman who dropped nearly seven dollars every weekday morning on a coffee-shop latte and low-fat muffin.”[i]  One needs to assess whether all the packaged foods they buy really cost less than healthier fare.

  4. Limit red meat in your diet. Try substituting other, healthier and less expensive meats (like fish), as well as beans to your diet, plus eating more nuts. (Just beware the extra fats and added salt). [ii]

  5. Get you and your spouse on the same page.  If you are married, it'll be almost impossible to attain this goal without you and your partner moving forward as one. Just as eating healthy is so much more difficult without a key partner's help/encouragement, so also doing so on a budget is super difficult when one of you keeps sabotaging the effort.

 

So, work toward implementing these, and start to see real progress, for your health/weight, but ALSO your finances.
